Product Recommendations

Overview

The Product Section in OutSmart EMR gives you tools to recommend or prescribe products directly within your charts.

A product in OutSmart can include:

• Supplements
• Blends
• Prescriptions
• Homeopathics
• Tinctures
• Any other item you recommend or prescribe

Note: The Product Section in your SOAP chart is linked to your OutSmart dispensary. Even if you do not sell products, you must configure a dispensary because it stores all product information and enables reporting.

Adding a Product to Your Chart

Steps to add a product:

• Click the green +P button on the left side of your chart.
• Select the Products section from the menu.
• Confirm the correct dispensary is selected.
• Choose a product from the product dropdown list.

Hint: Once a product is selected, you can either use simple text fields for dosage/description or explore advanced features like prescriptions, blends, and schedules.

Dosage & Instructions, and Description Boxes

For simple recommendations, use the provided text fields:

• Dosage & Instructions: Enter the recommended dosage.
• Description: Optionally add details about the product and its relevance to the patient’s condition.

Note: This is the quickest way to chart product recommendations if you do not need advanced workflows.

Creating a New Product Within a Medical Chart

If the product is not already in your dispensary, you can create it directly from the chart.

Steps to create a new product:

• In the Product Section, ensure the correct dispensary is selected.
• Click the Menu button next to the product selection box.
• Choose Create New Product.
• Enter the product name (required).
• Optionally add more details if time allows.
• Click Create Product — the new product will be added as the selected product.

Hint: If you’re short on time, only the product name is required. You can add details later in the OutSmart Dispensary.

Note

Even clinics that don’t sell products need a configured dispensary — the Product Section is wired to it, and so are reports, the Express Checkout card, and product labels. Set up at least one dispensary at the start, even if it’s empty; you can keep adding products into it over time as you recommend them.

Best Practices & Considerations

• Always select the correct dispensary: Recommendations rely on the data stored in it.
• Keep it simple when needed: Use dosage/description boxes for fast charting.
• Use advanced workflows wisely: Explore prescriptions, blends, and schedules when detail is necessary.
• Name first, details later: Create products quickly with a name only; update details later in the dispensary.
• Leverage reporting: Consistent use of the dispensary enables powerful reporting on product usage.
