Printing and Faxing Prescriptions

A prescription written in the Products section of a chart can be printed or faxed from three different places in OutSmart. All three open the same Prescription Print View, where you choose whether to send the whole list, a selected subset, or a single prescription.

Before you can print or fax, you need to have written the prescription. See Recipes and Blends for the Products section and the +Prescription field, and Protocols for the reusable templates that speed up writing.

The Three Places You Can Print or Fax

From the chart itself

Click the Print/Fax Rx button at the top left of the prescription area in the Products section. The print view opens.

This is the natural path while you’re still writing the chart and want to send the prescription right away.

From the Patient Workspace

Open the patient’s workspace and look for the Medical Summary section. It lists every active supplement and pharmaceutical recommendation for the patient. Each prescription has a print icon beneath it — click it to open the print view.

Both the practitioner who wrote the prescription and any office admin can print or fax from here.

This is the right path when you’re coming back to a chart later (for example, the patient called for a refill) or when admin staff is sending an Rx on the practitioner’s behalf.

From the Express Checkout card

Open the Express Checkout card on the Dashboard, find the patient’s row, and click their name to expand the details. The patient’s recommended prescriptions appear there.

Click the menu button to the left of a prescription, then click Print Prescription Sheet. The print view opens with every prescription the practitioner wrote in today’s chart.

Both the practitioner and any office admin can print or fax from here. This is the right path for end-of-visit prescription printing while admin staff is checking the patient out — they can print and hand over the Rx in the same flow as taking payment.

The Prescription Print View

Once the print view opens, the three “where you came from” paths converge — you’ll see every prescription written for the patient in this visit, with three send options:

  • Print All / Fax All — print or fax the entire prescription list. The button is at the top of the view.
  • Print Selected / Fax Selected — check the Select for print box next to each prescription you want to include, then click the Print Selected or Fax Selected button at the top.
  • Print this Rx Only / Fax this Rx Only — print or fax a single prescription. The buttons appear beside each individual prescription in the list.

Choose whichever fits. Printing All is fast when the patient is taking everything; the Selected and Single options are useful when only part of the prescription set is being sent right now (for example, faxing one Rx to a specialty pharmacy while the rest go on a printed sheet for the patient).
