AI in OutSmart
OutSmart includes a family of AI-powered features built directly into the parts of the system where you already work. They are designed to save time on tasks that are mechanical (transcribing lab values), repetitive (drafting standard letters), or memory-intensive (finding the right help article). You stay in control. Every AI output is yours to review, edit, and decide how to use.
This section describes what each AI feature does, how to use it, and how the shared AI Credits system pays for it.
The AI features available today
| Feature | What it does | Where you find it |
|---|---|---|
| Lab AI | Reads a lab report (PDF or image) and pulls the test names, values, units, and reference ranges into a structured list you can import into the chart. Optional clinical interpretation gives you a short written summary of the results. | The Measurements section of any SOAP chart, via Import From Lab Results |
| Patient Correspondence | Drafts a letter to another provider from the patient’s chart. Pick the kind of letter (Referral, Update, Consultation, or Clinical Care Request) and the AI writes accordingly. You review, edit, sign, and finalize. | The Create Patient Correspondence button on the Patient Workspace |
| Ask OutSmart | An AI help assistant trained on this entire knowledgebase. Ask a question in plain English and get an answer with links to the relevant articles. | The button in the bottom centre of every page once you’re signed in |
How the AI features are paid for
The paid AI features (Lab AI and Patient Correspondence) share a single billing system called AI Credits. Each AI action costs a small number of credits. You can use AI credits in four ways:
- Starter credits. A one-time pool of free credits granted the first time you use an AI feature, so you can try the system without committing.
- An AI Plan. A monthly subscription that gives you a recurring bucket of credits and a small accuracy bonus.
- Top-up credits. A one-time purchase of extra credits, available to AI Plan subscribers when their monthly bucket runs low.
- An Office Pool. A single subscription bought by the office owner that everyone in the office can draw from.
Each of these is explained in its own page under AI Credits & Plans.
Ask OutSmart is free. It does not use AI credits.
Patient privacy and consent
OutSmart’s AI features process patient health information on secure third-party systems, with written agreements, encryption, strict access controls, and a contractual prohibition on the AI providers using the information to train their own models. The full medical record stays in OutSmart, in its country of origin. Only task-specific information is sent for each AI action.
Because some processing may happen on systems in Canada or the United States depending on the specific task, patients should be informed that AI is part of their care. The AI and Health Information page explains the privacy frameworks that apply (HIPAA, PIPEDA, the various provincial laws), the safeguards OutSmart has in place, candid answers to the worries patients commonly have about AI and health data, and a suggested paragraph you can copy into your patient consent forms.
Where AI is going
The current set of AI features is the starting point. More are planned across the system, including additional letter types, more places where Lab AI can be invoked, and AI assistance in other parts of the chart. As new AI features ship, they will appear in this section under their own pages.
