How AI Credits Work

OutSmart’s paid AI features (Lab AI and Patient Correspondence) share a single billing system called AI Credits. One credit balance covers every AI action. This page explains the parts and how they fit together. Each part has its own page for the details.

Each AI action costs a small number of credits

Every paid AI action uses 1 credit when it runs. A second use of the same action on the same document (re-analyzing a lab report, re-opening a saved interpretation) does not cost another credit. Saved results are free.

ActionCredits
Analyze a lab report (Lab AI)1
Generate Clinical Interpretation (Lab AI)1
Generate a Patient Correspondence letter (AI Letters)1
Importing lab rows into the chart0
Editing an AI draft after it’s generated0
Re-opening a saved analysis or interpretation0
Using Ask OutSmart0

The credit count for a new AI action will be named on that feature’s own page when it ships.

Where credits come from

There are four sources of AI credits. Most practitioners use a combination of them.

SourceWho it’s forWhat it gives you
Starter creditsAny practitioner trying AI for the first timeA one-time pool of free credits, granted automatically the first time you use an AI feature
An AI PlanPractitioners who use AI regularlyA monthly bucket of credits in your name, plus a small accuracy bonus on every renewal
Top-up creditsAI Plan subscribers whose monthly bucket runs lowA one-time purchase of extra credits that don’t expire
An Office PoolAn office owner buying AI for several practitioners at onceA single subscription that everyone at the office (or owner’s offices) can draw from

You don’t have to pick one. A practitioner can have starter credits used up, then start an AI Plan, then buy a top-up later in the month, then also draw from the office’s pool. OutSmart will use them in the right order automatically (see below).

What gets used first when you run an AI action

When you click an AI button, OutSmart deducts credits in a fixed order:

  1. Your personal credits (starter credits or the credits from your AI Plan)
  2. Your share of the Office Pool (if your office owner has one)
  3. Your top-up balance (if you’ve bought one)

You don’t have to think about this. The right bucket is picked automatically based on what’s available. The credit counter on the AI button shows the total of all three.

Where to see your balance and manage your plan

  • The credit counter on every AI button. A small purple pill on the right of every AI action button shows your remaining credits at a glance.
  • The Subscriptions page → AI Plans tab. See your current plan, change plans, and look at the available options. Open it from the Subscription link in your account menu, then click the AI Plans tab.

The Subscriptions page is the main place for current pricing. We don’t publish AI plan prices in this guide because they’re set in the live page and may change. The page always shows the current numbers.

What happens to your credits when you change plans

A few rules that come up often:

  • Upgrading a plan mid-month. Your credit balance resets to the new plan’s amount when the new plan starts.
  • Cancelling a plan. Your personal AI plan credits are cleared at the end of your current billing period. Any top-up credits you bought separately stay in your account.
  • Removing an AI Plan from one practitioner and adding it for another. The removed practitioner’s plan credits are cleared. The new practitioner gets a fresh credit grant. AI Plans can’t be reassigned mid-period; you remove and re-add.
  • Renewal failed (card declined). You keep using your existing credit balance for a short grace period while OutSmart retries the charge. If the retry succeeds, nothing changes for you. If it doesn’t, the AI features stop working on your next click and you’re routed to update your payment method.
