Starter Credits
Starter credits are a small pool of free AI credits granted to every practitioner the first time they use any AI feature in OutSmart. They exist so you can try Lab AI and Patient Correspondence without committing to a subscription, and decide afterwards whether an AI Plan is right for you.
How starter credits work
The first time you click an AI button (Analyze a lab report, Generate Clinical Interpretation, generate a Patient Correspondence letter, or any future AI action), OutSmart grants your starter credits and runs the action you asked for. You don’t see a “claim your free credits” screen. The credits arrive in the background and the action proceeds normally.
After the first action, the credit counter on every AI button shows your remaining starter balance. You can use the credits on any paid AI feature, in any order, until they run out.
How many starter credits and when they expire
The starter pool is set by OutSmart and may change over time. The exact current amount is shown on the AI Plans tab of the Subscriptions page, listed there as the starter allotment.
Starter credits do not expire on a date. They sit in your balance and are used up only when you actually run an AI action.
One starter pool per practitioner, ever
Starter credits are granted once per practitioner, lifetime. Once you’ve received them, you don’t receive a second pool, not when your office switches plans, not when you re-add yourself to a subscription, not when you join a new office.
This is what keeps starter credits as a “first taste” offer rather than a permanent free tier. If you find yourself using AI features regularly, an AI Plan is what keeps your balance topped up each month.
Who qualifies
Every practitioner with an OutSmart account qualifies for one starter pool. There are no restrictions based on your base subscription level. Practitioners with a Basic or PRO subscription, practitioners with an older legacy subscription, and practitioners with no subscription at all are all eligible.
The starter pool is per-practitioner, not per-office. If your office has five practitioners, each of the five gets their own starter pool the first time they personally use an AI feature.
When the starter pool runs out
When your starter credits hit zero on a click, OutSmart shows a panel explaining that your starter pool is used up. The panel offers two options:
- View AI Plans. Opens the Subscriptions page to pick a monthly AI Plan.
- Not now. Closes the panel without subscribing. The AI action you were trying to run does not proceed, but you can still use OutSmart normally.
See When You’re Out of Credits for the details of that panel and the options on it.
Troubleshooting
I expected starter credits but I’m being told I have none
You’ve used your starter pool already. Starter credits are granted once per practitioner, lifetime. There isn’t a second grant. To keep using AI features, either subscribe to an AI Plan or, if your office owner has one, draw from the Office Pool.
I’m a new practitioner at this office but I’m not getting starter credits
If you used AI in OutSmart at a previous office (under the same user account), your starter pool was granted then. Joining a new office doesn’t reset it.
If you’ve truly never used an AI action under this user account before and a click is failing without a “starter credits granted” experience, contact us at contact.outsmartemr.com so we can look at what’s going on.
